The Sama Ensemble, led by Mahya Panahi, centres its musical performances around the tanbur. The tanbur is one of the oldest string instruments from the western region of Iran. It is traditionally used by the Yarsan people in their religious ceremonies. Over the past fifty years, the tanbur has gained more prominence in the international music scene, now often referred to as the contemporary tanbur. The Sama Ensemble will showcase the rich heritage of the tanbur by performing both ancient modes and exploring new dimension of the instrument. The ensemble will present a unique blend of traditional tanbur compositions alongside innovative performances.
